Tampa Bay reliever Joel Peralta was suspended eight games by Major League Baseball Thursday afternoon for having a foreign substance in his glove in Tuesday’s game against Washington, according to a report on the team’s website.
Peralta, who pitched for Washington in 2010, was ejected from Tuesday’s game for having pine tar in his glove. Umpires were tipped off by Washington manager Davey Johnson who had requested they inspect the pitcher’s glove after he came on in relief of starter David Price.
Peralta has elected to file an appeal, though, and is free to pitch until the matter is resolved.
“I got a call saying that the league said eight games,” said Peralta. “We’re appealing right now. So [I] just have to sit tight and see [what happens]. I’m allowed to pitch today, so that’s all I care about right now.”
