Rahm Emanuel, President Obama’s former chief of staff, has gotten the green light to run for mayor of Chicago. Emanuel has been lobbying to run for Chicago mayor for months amid questions over his ties to the city. The Chicago Board of Elections approved his candidacy on Dec. 23, and he immediately started campaigning on the streets by shaking hands and meeting city residents.

Emanuel already scored his first endorsement from the Chicago Plumber’s Union Local 130, and it is rumored that former President Bill Clinton will also endorse him.

On the eve of the Election Board’s decision, he issued a statement defending his prolonged absence from Chicago.

“The only reason I left town was to serve President Obama and ... I always intended to return,” stated Emanuel.

Emanuel has a long record of political involvement, including from 1993 to 1998, when he worked in the Clinton White House as senior adviser to the president for Policy and Strategy.
