At least nine people have lost their lives and more than 70 are missing following flash floods that raged through the business centre of Toowoomba yesterday, Jan. 10, and into the foothills.

In Toowoomba’s lower regions, there were numerous deaths in small communities in Lockyer Valley.

Several young children are counted among the dead, while whole families are among the missing, said Queensland State Premier Anna Bligh, according to AAP.

Severe floods are now moving to Brisbane, the state’s capital.

Ms. Bligh said she believed more lives had been lost with many still unaccounted for.

“There are the families and the loved ones of 59 Australians tonight who do not know where those people are ... We know that we have very grave fears for 15 (people),” she said, according to AAP.

Ms. Bligh said the disaster had stretched emergency resources to the limit. “It might be breaking our hearts at the moment but it will not break our will.”
