The Sherbrooke, Que. factory that was the site of a deadly explosion stored more acetone than allowed by provincial standards, according to news reports.

Radio-Canada reported on Friday that in 2002, Quebec’s environment ministry had allowed Neptune Technologies to store 33,000 litres of acetone outside the factory and 6,000 litres inside.

However, investigators probing the Nov. 8 blast found that the amount of acetone was higher than the limits imposed.

A tank of acetone is believed to have been the source of the explosion that killed three people and left close to 20 injured.

According to Radio-Canada, Neptune Technologies had also begun expanding the capacity of the factory without the proper authorization from the environment ministry.
