BOSTON—Investigators probing the killing of a New York City woman who went for a run near her mother’s home in central Massachusetts and later was found dead in the woods say she was attacked by a man and may have injured him in a struggle.

Worcester (WUS'-tur) District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. asked for the public’s help Thursday identifying a man with scratches, scrapes or bruises sustained Sunday.

Victim Vanessa Marcotte was a 27-year-old Google account manager. She was found dead Sunday night hours after she went for a run near her mother’s home in Princeton, a rural town west of Boston.

Early says investigators believe the attack happened Sunday between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. He asks people to report any cars that were on a nearby country road called Brooks Station Road then.

“We believe that there was struggle between Vanessa and her killer that may have resulted in her killer receiving injuries,” Early elaborated, according to MassLive. “Her assailant we know was a man. These injuries specifically were scratches, scrapes and or bruises.”

Early added that investigators are “still approaching this from every angle. We don’t know if this was a random act,” according to a CBS News report earlier this week. “We’re considering anyone and everyone who could have committed this crime.”
