NEW YORK—A public hearing Monday, by the entity in charge of regulating the taxi industry, will examine whether or not to raise taxi fares.
The Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) is proposing an estimated 17 percent fare increase for the average passenger.
The increase would not affect the base fare, which would stay at $2.50, but instead increase how much every click of the meter raises the fare. Every click—equaling one-fifth of a mile when the taxi goes 12 miles an hour or faster, or each 60 seconds when the taxi travels slower than 12 miles an hour—would increase from 40 cents to 50 cents.
Rates per click from airports would also increase. For example, during trips between JFK and Manhattan, the rate would increase from 45 cents to 52 cents.
A small percentage of fares, not to exceed 6 cents a trip, under the proposed rules, would go toward newly created health care and disability coverage for drivers.
The hearing will take place 11 a.m. at 33 Beaver St., 19th floor. The public can comment on the proposed rules via other means, such as emailing [email protected].
