This is an Epoch Times News Brief presidential election update. From the News Brief desk, I’m Bill Thomas and here’s what’s happening right now.
Donald Trump wins the 2024 presidential election, a red wave sweeps the nation, and Republicans are on the verge of taking both chambers of Congress.
Earlier today, the Associated Press projected that Trump was the winner after the president-elect won the battleground states of Pennsylvania, Georgia, North Carolina, Wisconsin, and Michigan. At the time, Trump was also comfortably ahead in Nevada.
So you know, the votes are still being tallied in a number of states, but Trump has already secured 295 electoral votes, well over the 270 that are needed to clinch the presidency. By comparison, Harris has won 226 electoral votes.
Additionally, so far Trump has received nearly 5 million more total votes than Harris. The president-elect has received more than 72 million individual tallies, compared to more than 67 million for the vice president.
By the way, exit polls taken by Edison Research showed that Trump made significant gains with both Hispanic Americans and younger voters.
As we continue, Trump took the stage early this morning in Florida at the Palm Beach County Convention Center to address his supporters.
By then, Republicans had already captured the U.S. Senate with victories in Ohio and West Virginia, and the president-elect was on track to win the national popular vote as well.
In his victory speech, Trump said that God spared his life “for a reason,” in reference to the assassination attempts made on his life, and he called his victory “the greatest political movement of all time.”
The president-elect told the crowd that “we’re going to help our country heal,” that the country needs help badly, and he promised that “we’re going to fix our borders.”
As the Trump transition team prepares to take the White House, Americans can expect major changes in how the U.S. government handles foreign affairs, tax policy, and illegal immigration.
Moving along, Republicans have taken control of the Senate and are on the brink of securing the House of Representatives, and here’s what’s going on.
Right now, the GOP has 52 seats in the Senate, the Democrats have 44, and there are still four more that haven’t been called yet.
Meanwhile, over in the House, Republicans currently hold 205 seats, while the Democrats have 189. There are another 41 seats that remain up in the air.
So you know, a number of states will take several days to count mail-in and provisional ballots, so we may not know for a while the final tallies. However, you should know that things are trending in the favor of the Republicans when it comes to controlling the House.
We continue now with Vice President Kamala Harris. She’s just made a concession speech in Washington, and here’s more on that story.
Harris spoke to her supporters at her alma mater, Howard University, and she urged them to accept the results of the election.
She also said that there would be a peaceful transfer of power, and that she promised to keep up the fight that had fueled her campaign.
Harris encouraged her followers to continue to battle in the voting booth, in the courts, and in the public square, and that the fight for freedom takes hard work. She also reassured the young people in the audience that everything will be OK.
