Port Jervis Police Officer Examination Scheduled for Nov. 19

The City of Port Jervis will hold an examination for anyone wishing to become a Port Jervis police officer. The testing will take place on Nov. 19. Applications to take the exam must be filed by Oct. 13 and be accompanied by a $25 application processing fee. The application fee must be in the form of a check or money order made payable to the Port Jervis Civil Service Commission.

Applicants should be residents of Orange Ulster, Dutchess, Sullivan, Putnam, or Westchester counties for at least four months prior to taking the exam. Applicants need to be at least 19 years old and within six months of their  20th birthdays. They must be 20 by the time they are hired. Applicants cannot be over 35 years old, but exemptions apply for those who were engaged in military service. 

Applicants must hold United States citizenship, have a high school diploma or equivalency diploma, and meet one of the following requirements:

(A) Completion of 60 college credits at a regionally accredited or New York state registered college or university; OR

(B) Completion of 30 college credits and the equivalent of one year of work experience as a police officer, correction officer, police dispatcher, licensed security guard; OR

(C) Three years of active military experience in the armed forces of the United States with an honorable discharge; OR

(D) An equivalent amount of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.
