A man imprisoned for possession of 4.4 pounds of heroin in 2007 escaped a government hospital in Chandigarh, India, on Wednesday.
Paramjit Singh was condemned to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment in the Burail Model jail, according to the Big News Network Web site. To protest the verdict, Paramjit went on a hunger strike and was then transferred to the hospital because of his worsening condition, said Deputy Superintendent of police J.S. Khaira in the report.
At the hospital, he was to be kept under surveillance by five police officers. However, he managed to flee the hospital after telling one of the nurses he was going to the bathroom, reported Vamban News online newspaper.
“We have booked one head constable and four constables, deployed there to keep an eye on him, for negligence in their duty,” said Khaira.
