TAICHUNG, Taiwan—Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company performed at the Jhungshan Auditorium in Taichung on Saturday March 31, presenting ancient China’s cultural hertiage through classical Chinese dance and music.
Dressed in brilliant robes in delicate yellow and green, the maidens from Qiang, China’s oldest ethnic group of Southwestern China, enjoyed a peaceful life in the golden corn field overlooked by the big blue sky. Such a carefree and innocent nature was in full display in the program Dance of the Qiang People, which earned multiple rounds of applause from the audience.
On the recommendation of a friend, Chien-Sheng Tiao, Chief of Taichung Police Department, came along to see the performance. He happily told his friend: “I really like Dance of the Qiang People. The elegant movement of the dance gave me a glimpse into how the greater China area was strongly influenced by the traditional Chinese culture.“ Then he added, ”This is unique.”
Presented for the first time in Shen Yun Performing Arts, this ethnic Chinese minority of Qiang once played a major role in ancient China. Wearing dresses in delicate yellow and green, the joyful performers grace the stage with free-swinging movements and lively steps, bringing the audience a sense of jubilation. Dancers sway and shake to a catchy beat as they celebrate a bountiful harvest, says the program booklet.
“Shen Yun Performing Arts is really something special,” Mr. Tiao said. “Once again, I came to be aware of the powerful influence of traditional Chinese culture as portrayed by [Shen Yun]. I could literally say that I actually saw the greatness of Chinese culture.”
Before leaving, Mr. Tiao flipped through the available pamphlets regarding Shen Yun and took a picture with his friend Chu-Cheng Min, professor of Political Science at National Taiwan University, posing before the giant Shen Yun poster.
Together, they happily said “wonderful.”
