Poisoned bread rolls sickened 25 people in Germany after the rolls were reportedly found to have been laced with rat poison.

The rolls were left at a plastics company in Lower Saxony as “a gift,” police told the BBC.

Workers ate the bread rolls, which were left in a box along with a note. Someone noticed that there was a substance on the rolls and called emergency services.

They were then hospitalized and tests confirmed that they consumed rat poison.

However, no one showed any signs of significant poisoning.

“We don’t believe the amount of poison used would have been deadly, but it could have caused serious illness,” police spokesman Frank Soika said, according to the broadcaster.

Police have not identified a suspect or a motive in the incident.

Experts told The Local publication that they are unsure how long rat poison kicks in.

A helicopter was sent to retrieve the rat poison-laced rolls for more testing.

Elaborating further, the UPI website reported that the rolls had unusual red grains sprinkled on them.
