ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.—Pirelli World Challenge, the premier professional series of the Sports Car Club of America, started its 2013 season with a pair of practice sessions and qualifying on the narrow, twisty 1.8-mile Streets of St. Petersburg circuit. The weekend will finish with a pair of races, one Saturday and one Sunday.
The front row of Saturday’s race will be all Volvo; Alex Figge and Randy Pobst in the KPAX cars qualified 1–2 in the GT class, with Ryan Dalziel in the Privacy Star/Entrust Porsche behind them.
Andy Lee in the Best IT/Chevrolet Camaro took the GTS pole, followed by a pair of Porsche Caymans: Jack Baldwin in the Motul/Stoptech/Invoice prep car qualified second ahead of the Napleton Porsche Cayman S of Neal Gleason.
The World Challenge event is part of the IndyCar Honda Grand Prix of St. Pete weekend, which features the IndyCar season opener, as well as World Challenge, Pro Mazda, Indy Lights, USF 2000, and HSR historic racers.
Practice resumes Saturday with a final sessions starting at 10:25 a.m., and qualifying kicks off at 2:05 p.m. The IndyCar Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg starts at 12:40 p.m. on Sunday March 24. Tickets are available at the gate or through the IndyCar Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg website.
