Piggly Wiggly, a supermarket chain in the Southern and Midwestern U.S., is selling 29 of its stores in Georgia and South Carolina.
The majority of the stores--23 of them--will be sold in South Carolina, reported The Associated Press.
The Charleston-based chain is selling 22 stories to Bi-Lo and Harris Teeter will scoop up the rest. Eleven of the stores are in the Charleston area, but the firm will still have 10 in the area.
It is unclear how much they were sold for.
AP and local media did not give a list of the locations of stores that were sold.
Piggly Wiggly said that more competition in the grocery business was one of the reasons why it chose to sell the stores.
“Piggly Wiggly has a long tradition of operating customer-friendly stores in Charleston. These store locations and the dedicated associates who work in them make this an especially attractive transaction for Harris Teeter,” Thomas W. Dickson, Chairman of the Board and CEO of Harris Teeter, told WRAL.
“We plan to remodel and expand a number of these locations to create brand new Harris Teeter stores to serve our customers,” he said.
