House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), the current leader of the Democratic party, said that she’s “done with” President Donald Trump, her political rival, after a war of words between the pair escalated late last week and into the weekend.
The latest back-and-forth seemed to kick off when reports indicated Pelosi told Democratic colleagues in a closed-door meeting that she wanted to see Trump locked up.
The president, who was traveling overseas at the time, said that Pelosi was “a disgrace.”
“Nervous Nancy Pelosi is a disgrace to herself and her family for having made such a disgusting statement, especially since I was with foreign leaders overseas,” Trump wrote in a June 7 Tweet. “There is no evidence for such a thing to have been said.”
“Nervous Nancy & Dems are getting Zero work done in Congress and have no intention of doing anything other than going on a fishing expedition to see if they can find anything on me - both illegal & unprecedented in U.S. history. There was no Collusion—Investigate the Investigators! Go to work on Drug Price Reductions & Infrastructure!” he added.
He added another tweet on Saturday, June 8, writing that “Nervous Nancy and the Democrat House are getting nothing done.”
Pelosi was asked to confirm or deny the alleged comments she made about wanting to see the president locked up but declined to do either.
“When we have conversations in our caucus they stay in our caucus. Do people think there’s some impeachable offenses that the President committed? Yes. How serious are they? Are they criminal? Many people think they are,” she said, seemingly indicating that she did make the remarks.
Pelosi also said that impeachment is not off the table but noted that such a path does not have widespread support within her party.
