Paul Pelosi’s Lawyer Issues Statement After Alleged DUI Arrest of Speaker Pelosi’s Husband

An attorney for Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, issued a statement after he was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence.

Jail records show that Pelosi, 82, was arrested over the weekend in Napa County, California, and faces two misdemeanor charges. On Sunday, the California Highway Patrol released details about the arrest that said Pelosi’s late-model Porsche was struck by a Jeep as he was attempting to cross State Route 29.

Pelosi was arrested more than an hour after law enforcement officials responded to the scene, said the California Highway Patrol.

“The driver of the Porsche (Party Number 1, Pelosi) was traveling eastbound on Walnut Lane and attempted to cross SR-29, when his Porsche was struck by a party traveling northbound on SR-29 (Party Number 2, Lopez) driving a Jeep,” according to the release. “Pelosi was arrested for driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage at 11:44 pm. He was subsequently booked into the Napa County Detention Center for a violation of 23152(a) and 23152(b) of the vehicle code. The crash is being investigated by the Napa Area.”

Pelosi was booked early Sunday morning, and his bail was set at $5,000, according to a public booking report issued by the Napa County Sheriff’s Office.

But on Monday, his attorney, Larry Kramer, said that “several news reports about Saturday night’s traffic incident involving Paul Pelosi have included incorrect information.”

“Mr. Pelosi was attending a dinner party at the home of friends near Oakville,” he told Fox News’ Chad Pergram about the incident. “He left that party at 10:15 p.m. Saturday, to drive to his home a short distance away. He was alone in his car,” he said.

Kramer said Pelosi stopped at the intersection before turning onto Route 29 when he was “hit on the back fender by a Jeep.”

“Mr. Pelosi was fully cooperative with California Highway Patrol officers who arrived a few minutes later,” he said.

Kramer did not make mention of Pelosi’s arrest for allegedly driving under the influence.  It’s also not clear what he meant by “incorrect information” and did not specify which media made the alleged error.

“A prior driving offense erroneously attributed to Mr. Pelosi is untrue and likely refers to an unrelated person with the same name. This error must be corrected,” his lawyer said in the statement to the Daily Beast. “There are also incorrect reports that misstate the timing of events.”

Video footage published by a local ABC affiliate station showed a strip of fencing that appeared to have been damaged during the accident. A street sign was also downed, it showed.

The 48-year-old driver of the Jeep, who was not named, told ABC7 that he’s happy no one was injured in the crash.

Drew Hammill, a spokesperson for the speaker, told news outlets over the past weekend that she will not be commenting on the matter. Speaker Pelosi was in Rhode Island on Sunday and was giving a speech at a university.

“The speaker will not be commenting on this private matter which occurred while she was on the East Coast,” Hammill said.

Entertainment news website TMZ was the first to report on the arrest.
