A baby was found hidden inside of a carry-on bag on an Air France plane, according to officials on Wednesday.
The bag belonged to an Air France passenger who was on board the jet.
French authorities have opened an investigation into the matter.
The child, who traveled with an adult, was found on Air France Flight 1891 from Istanbul to Paris. The baby didn’t have a ticket.
A witness told website Planet.fr: “The cloth bag belonged to a woman sitting at the back. At one point, she wanted to open it and somebody on the neighboring row of seats saw that something was moving inside,” according to Fox News.
The baby was between 1 and 2 years old, according to Metro. Police did not name the woman.
Sources at the Charles de Gaulle Airport told The Local that the woman was a resident of France who was in process of adopting the child, who is from Haiti.
“She was apparently in the transit zone in Istanbul, and had crossed the customs checkpoint with the child, when she was prevented from boarding a flight with her,” the source said.
After that, the woman “decided to hide the child in a bag to get aboard another flight, after buying a new ticket,” The Local reported, citing the source.
The woman was taken into custody, but prosecutors decided not to press charges.
