One of the most popular festivals in Greece falls on Aug. 15. Called Decapentaugusto (“15th of August”) or Panagias. Now a public holiday and religious holiday, in antiquity it celebrated the goddess Artemis.
Traditionally following 15 days of fasting, the festivals usually feature live music, outdoor grilling, and a lot of wine.
Ovelia, a grill house in Astoria, celebrates the holiday, with the highlight being a lamb cooked on a spit over an open flame (which is called “ovelia,” same as the grill house). Entertainment starts at 8 p.m.
