Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin pulled a Big Gulp soda drink out from behind the podium as she gave a speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on Saturday.

One viewer told New York Magazine, the moment “just really symbolized American freedom.” Another viewer told the magazine that Palin, with her Big Gulp cup in hand “gave a new look to the Statue of Liberty.”

The sip made a bigger splash in some online media than the speech, which criticized President Barack Obama for his support of gun laws, and also acknowledged a shortcoming of Palin’s Republican party: Republicans “talk about rebranding the GOP instead of restoring the trust of the American people,” Palin said.

Instead of rebuilding the party, Republicans should be “rebuilding the middle class,” Palin said.

Concerning gun laws, she said it is naive to believe “the bad guys, who ignore the laws, are all of a sudden going to follow new laws.”

To say, “that chunk of metal did the crime … [is] like saying that fork made me fat,” Palin joked.

At the end, she took a jibe at New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s campaign to ban sugary drinks, saying: “Oh, Bloomberg’s not around, our Big Gulp is safe.”
