Every year before Shen Yun tours Taiwan, Mr. Chen would tell his students and their parents that they must go and see it. “After you have seen it, you will know what I told you is absolutely true.”
KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan—On the evening of Feb. 28, professional painter Chen Chia-shang watched Shen Yun Performing Arts’ second performance in Kaohsiung at the The Hall of the Kaohsiung City Cultural Center. After watching Shen Yun every year, he still was amazed, “Shen Yun is not just first class, it is superb!”
The first time he watched Shen Yun he was in his 70s and he made a comment: “This is the most spectacular show I have seen in 77 years.” This year he was just as impressed. “I am 81 years old and, to be honest, no other show I have ever seen is this magnificent.”
Every year before Shen Yun tours Taiwan, Mr. Chen would tell his students and their parents that they must go and see it. “After you have seen it, you will know what I told you is absolutely true. You will be so overwhelmed that you won’t believe that such an extraordinary art company could exist,” Mr. Chen told his students. “The genuine beauty is right here!”
Mr. Chen recommended those who study art or any kind of design related skills, including costume design, should watch Shen Yun. “Shen Yun is designed by outstanding artists.” He believed that schools with departments of the arts should recommend Shen Yun to the students. “The students need to come and see it because this is what’s worth seeing.”
The flawless coordination of every aspect of the performance impressed Mr. Chen. He took A Joyful Harvest as an example. “The artist was beating the drum on the backdrop; the movement and the motions of the drum on the backdrop matched with absolute precision; unbelievable!”
“Shen Yun promotes the beauty of the sound and color of Chinese culture and helps preserve them,” Mr. Chen concluded, “Perfect! Perfect indeed!”
Background: The themes of Mr. Chen’s paintings focus mostly on rural areas, farming, and farmers. He is known as Millet of Taiwan. He is currently the chairman of the Asian Watercolor Painting Federation, director of Japanese Modern Art Association, founder and president of Kaohsiung Watercolor Association, and member of Tainan Art Research Association.
