Did a pair of astronauts on the Apollo 10 mission hear music while on the far side of the moon?

A CNN report recently featured a section of the audio, after which one astronaut can be heard saying, “The music sounds outer spacey, doesn’t it?” It is later described as a “whistling sound.”

Eugene Cernan and John Young reportedly listened to these noises for nearly an hour which is about the time that they were completely cut off from communications with Earth. The two even debated whether to notify Mission Control, doubting that anyone would believe them.

A NASA technician has since explained that the sound was likely radio interference. A new episode of the Science Channel’s show NASA’s Unexplained Files explores this event. The show incorporates transcripts and audio of the Apollo 10 flight to the moon in 1969 which had been classified by the agency until 2008.
