It’s the red carpet runway, the fuel for fashionista gossip for days to come.
Epoch Times reporters Marcus Alexander and Kati Vereshaka, are our scrutinizing eyes on the Oscars fashion scene, with occasional commentary from Epoch Times reporter Kristina Skorbach.
Overall Impressions:
Kati: Beige rules the carpet, but Lupita Nyong'o is the red carpet winner with her light-blue gown!
Marcus: This year’s dresses were not so daring, as most stars went with skin-tone dresses and kept to slim and subtle, figure-enhancing styles. Also popular were backless and strapless, floor-length gowns.
My favorite dress of the night was Sandra Bullock’s Alexander McQueen inky, midnight-blue dress. With the elegant, draped cloth, her shoulder-length and side-swept locks, and a confident air, she is the red carpet winner. Lupita Nyong'o was a star on the red carpet and on the Oscars stage.

Marcus: Sandra Bullock’s carpet-sweeping black Alexander McQueen dress and Lorraine Schwartz diamond bangle stole the red carpet, but will she steal the golden man?
Emma Watson

Marcus: Emma Watson’s style was subdued. She wore a long, silvery-black gown, high-necked and sleeveless, by Vera Wang .
Bette Midler

Kati: Bette Midler joined Jennifer Lawrence as one of the few people to wear a daring color this evening.

Kerry Washington

Marcus: Last year, Kerry Washington was bright and vivacious in a coral, satin, strapless gown by Miu Miu. This year, her custom-made, violet gown suits her calm, maternal look in her pregnancy. I love the simple, sparkling detail on the bust, which adds a touch of glamour.

Charlize Theron

Kati: Charlize Theron glided onto the red carpet in a black gown with tulip-like decolletage detail—simple and somber, but very statuesque. She is always beautiful and impeccable in her fashion choices, but it’s time for Theron to take some chances. There is something in her style that’s ready for an attitude overhaul. We’ve been pleasantly surprised, now we’d like to be amazed.
Jennifer Lawrence

Kati: Jennifer Lawrence, nominated for Supporting Actress in “American Hustle,” continued tonight’s parade of body-hugging gowns, but in a tomato-red that stands out among the popular neutral colors. Her simple, short haircut and up-swept bangs underscored the simple elegance of her look.
Marcus: Lawrence took command of the carpet in her red strapless Dior. Her newly cropped hair with its highlights shined along with her smile.

Naomi Watts

Marcus: One of last year’s Oscar favorites, Naomi watt’s pearl-drop, nude, neck-to-toe dress was a classy choice for this year’s awards. Here’s her dress from last year:

Marcus: Jada Pinkett Smith’s custom Givenchy pink dress brought out her youthful glow.
Amy Adams

Kati: Nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role for “American Hustle,” Amy Adamas walked the red carpet in a simple and sculptural indigo dress—the antithesis to her 1970’s wardrobe in the movie. It really highlighted her updo and the tame red color of her hair.
Lupita Nyong'o

Marcus: Lupita Nyong'o of “12 Years a Slave” walked the red carpet as if parting the sea, arriving in a light-blue Prada Greek goddess number with a newly cropped hairdo with a thin silver head band.
Kati: Nyong'o really wears block colors well; very striking and dramatic, but somehow still quite demure and lady-like. She has that great combination of grace, beauty, and strength.
Kristina: From the waist up, she looks like she’s going to attend a marathon in Greece, but I like her pale-blue flowing gown better from the waist down.
Kati: Regardless of the winners of the gilded Oscar statue, my verdict is that Lupita Nyong‘o still rules the red carpet. Is it that her stylist is the best or is it that Nyong’o has a keen fashion eye? The other stars need to take a leaf out of Nyong’o‘s book and take some chances with their choices of red carpet gowns. Hands down she is the winner so far (7:45 p.m. EST).

Kristina: Kristin Bell’s gown is similar to Amy Adams’s swan-like dress from last year’s Oscars. Here’s a look back at that dress:

Kati: As Cate Blanchett, nominated for Best Actress in “Blue Jasmine,” and Sally Hawkins, nominated for supporting actress in the same movie, met, their respective gowns joined beige forces and patterns. The take-home lesson: beige rules.
It’s beginning to look a lot like a sea of beige, black, and shimmery whites in the ladies’ gowns. Jessica Biel continued the beige parade with a beige shimmer gown.
