Convicted murderer Oscar Pistorius underwent treatment at a hospital on Aug. 6 after sustaining injuries to his wrists while in confinement at a South African prison.
A correctional services spokesperson said Pistorius claims he injured himself falling out of bed in his prison cell, according to NBC News.
He was admitted to the local Kalafong hospital at 12:30 p.m., security guards told the City Press.
“He had bad cuts on his wrists and the doctors kept wrapping bandages around them,” said one of the guards.
The former Paralympian was released and sent back to prison later that day.
The incident has led to speculation that the act was intentional.
An inmate was reported by the City Press as saying that Pistorius had hurt himself intentionally, while two warders said blades were found in Pistorius’ cell during a search.
The incident also follows an investigation on Pistorius which was conducted after warders uncovered a pair of scissors, prescription drugs, and “toxic pills” in his cell three weeks ago. Prison nurses described Pistorius as “violent” and suggested that he may have been planning to overdose on the pills in a suicide attempt.
However, Pistorius’s brother, Carl, called claims of attempted suicide “completely untrue and sensational” on Twitter, adding that his brother simply slipped and injured himself
Pistorius is in the middle of serving a six-year prison sentence for the murder of his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day in 2013. Last month, the National Prosecuting Authority announced that they would appeal the six-year sentence, saying that it was “shockingly lenient.”
