Red Sox DH David Ortiz is headed to the disabled list with an injured right Achilles tendon, according to a report on the team’s website.
Fortunately for Boston, Ortiz did not rupture or tear the tendon according to a second MRI. The move is retroactive to Tuesday.
“It’s probably going to be a week to 10 days before he’s ready to go and take a little batting practice,” said manager Bobby Valentine.
Ortiz, who is hitting .316 with 23 home runs and 58 RBIs (all team-highs), was injured rounding the bases on Adrian Gonzalez’s home run Monday night.
The loss for Boston of the 36-year-old is just another in the latest string of injuries to key players this season. Among other Boston players who’ve spent time on the disabled list are Dustin Pedroia, Jacoby Ellsbury, Carl Crawford, Josh Beckett, and Clay Buchholz.
