The Orange County sheriff’s office reported on Aug. 8 the passing of its patrol K-9 Jake.
Jake was born in Slovakia on Sept. 20, 2004 and a year later was trained and put into service with then Deputy Sheriff Dustin Palen. Jake worked 11 years for Orange County.
In his first call of service, Jake recovered a loaded handgun. Since then, he has recovered numerous handguns, assisted in apprehending burglary suspects, and answered calls for suspicious packages and bomb threats.
The Sheriff’s Office said Jake and Sgt. Palen placed ninth in the nation in 2008 and fifth in the nation in 2010 for explosives detection. Jake suffered from an aggressive form of cancer, which ultimately lead to his death.
“The Orange County Sheriff’s Office would like to extend our deepest condolences to Sgt. Dustin Palen and his family on the loss of a partner, friend and family member,” the sheriff’s office said in a press release.
