Met Opera Summer Recital Series

Now in its third consecutive year, the Metropolitan Opera’s Summer Recital Series will feature arias and duets from a variety of operas at Jackie Robinson Park at 145th Street, in Manhattan, on Thursday, July 28, at 7 p.m. Featured performers include Layla Claire (recently appearing in “Don Carlo”), Renée Tatum (recently appearing in “Il Trovatore”), and Ryan Speedo Green (winner of the Met’s 2011 National Council Auditions). Bradley Moore conducts.

‘Wizard of Oz’ Live

Plaza Theatricals, a professional touring company, brings to life the entire musical “Wizard of Oz,” at Alley Pond Park in Queens, on Friday, July 29, at 7 p.m. Based on the 1900 fairytale novel, this performance is suitable for all ages. Bring a blanket. The park is located at 76th Avenue and Springfield Boulevard.

Historic Garden Summer Workshop

At Morris-Jumel Mansion, a house so old that George Washington once lived there, children can learn why gardens were so important during the 18th and 19th centuries during the Historic Garden Summer Workshop. In this weeklong workshop, from Aug. 1 to Aug. 5, 11 a.m.–2 p.m., the majority of the time will be spent outside in the mansion’s historic sunken garden studying nature, planting, and watering seeds. Children will make journals, leaf rubbings, terrariums, and other projects. The mansion is located in Manhattan at 160th Street and Edgecombe Avenue Ages 6 and up. An adult learning partner is required to stay with the student.

Waterlily Concert Series

Amid the beautiful surroundings of the New York Botanical Garden, visitors can enjoy a summer evening filled with Spanish-influenced guitar music at 7–9 p.m. on Thursdays, Aug. 4, 11, and 18, on the Conservatory Lawn. Picnic dinners, desserts, beer, and wine will be available for purchase. If you arrive before 7 p.m. you can enjoy the exhibition: “Spanish Paradise: Gardens of the Alhambra.”

Handel’s ‘Orlando’

Part of the Mostly Mozart Festival, San Francisco’s Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra brings to life Handel’s opera “Orlando” at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 14. “This ensemble is renowned for its dedication to historically informed renderings of the Baroque,” says Lincoln Center. The opera tells the story of the Christian knight Orlando, who falls in love with a pagan princess that unfortunately, loves someone else. In Italian with English supertitles.
