Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Vision Zero initiative to lower traffic fatalities citywide is moving forward.

The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT)  is finishing up a series of town halls in each borough to gather feedback from the city’s residents, and scheduling nine workshops for extensive input and planning.

“Making Vision Zero a reality means more than just engineering, education and enforcement: it’s a collaborative effort that will require every New Yorker to play their part,” stated DOT Commissioner Trottenberg. “These workshops are an open call for all citizens looking to shape the future of their neighborhoods. Building on a city’s worth of local insight, they will lay the groundwork for streets that work better for everyone.”

This marks the first step in the planning process for safer streets, according to the department release. Vision Zero includes redesigning 50 major streets a year, plus additions like improved lighting, speed bumps, and slow zones on the city’s roads.

The workshops will allow residents to learn more about the citywide plan, give input, and join moderated discussions with agency staff.
