Flight delays in New Hampshire to linger after blizzard

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — Flight cancellations are likely to linger at Manchester-Boston Regional Airport into at least Tuesday as a major snow storm is expected to hit the region.

Delta and United flights scheduled for Monday afternoon and evening were canceled ahead of the storm because of bad weather at connecting airports.

Manchester airport spokesman Tom Malafronte says the last round of inbound flights — which usually stay the night to get things going again the next day — will be cancelled so there will likely be no flights on Tuesday. The airport hasn’t closed for a snow storm in more than 25 years.

Meanwhile, state transportation crews are fixing equipment, preparing trucks, checking roads and pushing snowbanks back if necessary to make room for the new storm.

The National Weather Service is predicting blizzard conditions for a 250-mile stretch of the East coast. Parts of New Hampshire could see 18 to 25 inches of snow, with more falling toward the coast and southeastern part of the state.

Connecticut governor orders travel ban on state highways

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has ordered a travel ban on Connecticut highways and issued a state of emergency in response to the expected winter storm.

Malloy said Monday the ban is set to begin at 9 p.m. A spokesman for the state Department of Transportation said motorists violating the order could be ticketed.

The governor also said outages could total 100,000 for Connecticut Light & Power customers and 10,000 at United Illuminating.

Malloy plans to activate the emergency operations center at 4 p.m. Monday. It will remain open throughout the storm.

The National Weather Service is warning of a two-day snowfall of 20 to 30 inches and winds gusting more than 30 mph to as much as 75 mph. The state is under a blizzard warning from 1 p.m. Monday until midnight Tuesday.

Utilities preparing for blizzard-like conditions

HAMPTON, N.H. (AP) — Utilities in New Hampshire are preparing for the possibility of blizzard-like conditions as a major storm approaches the state Monday night into Tuesday.

Unitil spokesman Alec O'Meara says if that happens, bucket trucks will be unable to extend arms due to high winds at the storm’s peak. He says, though that the utility will still be able to work with first responders to address downed wire calls.

Unitil is securing additional third-party crews to provide assistance in the storm.

Public Service of New Hampshire says it is pre-staging employees and materials in locations across the state. It too, has secured additional outside crews.

No flights in or out of Logan during blizzard

BOSTON (AP) — Officials at Boston’s Logan International Airport say no flights will be allowed to take off or land at the facility during the height of the blizzard heading to the region.

The last flight out of Logan is expected to leave at about 7:30 p.m. Monday and no flights will land or take off on Tuesday.

Ed Freni, director of aviation at the Massachusetts Port Authority, the agency that runs the airport, says the goal is to resume operations on Wednesday.

The airport handles about 1,000 flights per day.

Forecasters say two feet or more of snow could fall on the Boston area during the storm expected to affect a 250 mile stretch of the East Coast.

Airlines are canceling thousands of flights in the region.
