BRASELTON, Ga.—The American Le Mans Series Petit Le Mans weekend has started, and the action on track won’t stop until Saturday night.

From 8:30 in the morning until six at night (plus night practice until 9 p.m. Thursday, there are cars on the track—practicing, testing, qualifying and racing.

With five different support series—IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge, Cooper Tires Prototype Lites, Pirelli World Challenge Championships, SCCA Pro Racing Trans-Am Series, and SCCA Pro Racing Playboy Mazda MX-5 Cup, plus five classes of ALMS/Intercontinental Le Mans Cup cars running, there is barely time to go to Vendors’ Village for lunch.

The morning started with the IMSA Lites, smaller versions of the ALMS prototypes. Next came the Playboy Mazdas, race-prepped Miatas. The late morning was devoted to GTs—Corvettes, Vipers, Mustangs, Camaros, Porsches, BMWs, Audis and Ferraris, and smaller sports car, like the APR Volkswagens, the Compass 360 Hondas, and the small KPax Volvos.

The afternoon will be the province of the ALMS/ILMC cars, the top-tier racing machines: Audi R18s, Peugeot 908s, Aston Martin AMR Lolas, Lola Mazdas … plus the GT Porsches, Ferrari, and Corvettes and Lotuses.

Most race fans won’t see this much action in three weekends; at Road Atlanta, all this is happening in one day—and again tomorrow, and again Friday. Then Saturday, The 14th running of Petit Le Mans: non-stop, high-speed excitement for1000 miles or ten hours, whichever comes first.
