Nine Inch Nails and Soundgarden announced they will embark on a co-headlining summer tour with Death Grips supporting them after weeks of speculation. Interestingly, both bands have recently released teasers over whether or not they will be touring at all.
In an interview with Spin this week at the SXSW Festival, Soundgarden dodged the question of touring with Nine Inch Nails with lead singer Chris Cornell nonchalantly replying, “You don’t have to ask anything.”
This lineup is strange considering Trent Reznor and Chris Cornell have previously been in a “feud.” The last time both bands performed together was in 1994 at a Canadian Festival.
According to a 2009 interview with Eye Weekly, Reznor discussed how the band had “a chip in our shoulder because their record [Superunknown] came out the same day Downward Spiral came out, and they beat us to No. 1 on Billboard. That became a kind of professional showdown. And we did show them.”
In addition to that infamous show, Reznor called Cornell a sellout for releasing a dance-themed solo album in 2009 where Cornell gave up his “core values” to sell records.
To Celebrate its 20th anniversary release, Soundgarden will be reissuing Superunknown on June 3. Nine Inch Nails The Downward Spiral also turned 20 earlier this month.
The tour will kick off in Las Vegas at Planet Hollywood on July 19 and will make a stop at Nikon at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, New York on August 1before finishing in Hollywood on August 25.
