Nicole Kidman wants the Haiti government to improve security in Haiti and stop sexual attacks on women, particularly following January’s earthquake.

Kidman, Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations’ Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), recently visited a Haitian camp specifically set up for women subjected to or at risk of sexual violence.

At the camp, administrators ensure that medical, legal and counseling services are available to the victims. They also train or re-train women to be able to earn a living.

‘During this trip I saw first-hand how this humanitarian disaster is impacting women and girls,’ Ms. Kidman said, according to Bigpond News.

‘The lack of shelter and security makes them more vulnerable to violence, in particular sexual violence. Yet, I have also seen the determination and resilience of women and men in Haiti to rebuild their country,” she said.

Ms. Kidman has been committed to helping Haiti since the earthquake, and helped man the phone for George Clooney’s Hope For Haiti telethon. She is also funding a new school in the area with her husband country singer Keith Urban.

Meanwhile Ms. Kidman and Mr. Urban have just bought a New York City luxury apartment, according to the Brisbane Times. The property overlooks the Hudson River and is worth in the region of AU$11.2 million (US$10 million) reported the Sunday Mail.
