A one-month-old baby was hospitalized after three ferrets mauled as much as 25 percent of the child’s face.

The baby girl was attacked in Darby Borough, Pennsylvania, according to NBC Philadelphia. The pet ferrets belonged to the family.

The mauling took place at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday inside the family’s home. The child was taken to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for treatment.

The ferrets were destroyed after the incident, Darby Police told the station.

Citing police, NBC said family was living “deplorable conditions” and the home was “infested with fleas and mites.”

In the house, there were several other animals including six cats, two dogs, and two turtles.

NBC noted that the only food in the home was a can of cranberry and a jar of peanut butter.

The other four children are in Child & Youth Services, said 6-ABC.

Ferrets are mammals that are part of the weasel family. They’re legal to own in Pennsylvania.
