The New York Yankees announced Tuesday that they have re-signed Brian Cashman to a three-year contract to serve as Senior Vice President and General Manager. Cashman, 44, has been in his current role since 1998, leading the Yankees to four World Series titles.
Cashman started with the Yankees in 1986 as an intern in the Minor League and scouting department before working his way up the ladder. Since replacing Bob Watson as GM in ‘98—at age 31—Cashman’s teams have made the playoffs in 13 of his 14 seasons.
His toughest task may be right in front of him as several of his most successful players—Jeter, A-Rod, and Rivera—could very well be retired by the time his contract runs out.
Cashman’s offseason begins having already re-signed star pitcher C.C. Sabathia to a contract extension that will keep the perennial Cy Young Award contender from opting out of his contract this fall.
