Summer Streets
Now in its fourth year, Summer Streets will give New Yorkers a reprieve from cars on Saturdays, Aug. 6, 13, and 20 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. The route stretches along Park Avenue from Brooklyn Bridge all the way up to 72nd Street, where it turns the corner and connects with Central Park. Bring your bike, roller blades, or walking shoes and look out for random events along the way like guacamole making demonstrations hosted by Chipotle at 52nd Street.

Hudson Warehouse Presents: The Taming of the Shrew
In nature’s theater, Shakespeare’s comedy, The Taming of the Shrew is brought to life by the Hudson Warehouse theater company at the Sailors and Soldiers Monument beginning Thursday Aug. 4, and continuing through Aug. 28, at 6:30 p.m. The plot follows the courtship of Petruchio, a gentleman of Verona, and Katherina, the headstrong shrew. The monument is located at West 89th Street in Riverside Park.

Chess Lecture and ‘Simul’ Game
Improve your chess game and witness a grandmaster in action at the Chess and Checkers House in Central Park on Saturday, Aug. 6, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Chess Grandmaster Lev Alburt will give tips on how to improve your chess game and then participate in “Simul” (simultaneous) games, in which the he plays up to 30 participants at once, moving from board to board making one move at a time. Royal British Legion Band USA Tour 2011
Part of a North American tour, the Royal British Legion Brass Band from England will be performing a free concert at the East River Park Amphitheatre in Lower Manhattan on Saturday, Aug. 6, at 4 p.m. The band continues the long musical tradition of the British Brass Band and is comprised of 35 brass and percussion players who perform a wide repertoire that includes contemporary, traditional, light classical, and patriotic music.

Soprano Lucy Crowe at Mostly Mozart
Acclaimed conductor Ivan Fischer leads the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra and leading lyric soprano Lucy Crowe in an all-Mozart program at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall on Tuesday, Aug. 9, and Wednesday, Aug. 10, at 8 p.m. They will perform Mozart’s “Ave Verum Corpus,” “Symphony No.41 in C major” (“Jupiter”), and “Vesperae Solennes de Confessore.” Also, if you arrive early, there will be pre-concert piano recitals by Ilya Yakushev at 7 p.m. He’ll perform Bach’s Partita No.2.
