A new video documents the deadly raid on a safe house that ultimately led to the capture of Mexican drug kingpin Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán.
Mexican marines stormed the compound, located in Los Mochis, Mexico, around 4 a.m, the Associated Press reports. The subsequent shootout killed five of Guzman’s henchmen and injured one marine.
One marine yelled “They got me! they got me!” after he was shot, reported CNN.
Guzman escaped during the raid, fleeing down a storm drain and getting out of a manhole on the street, but was later captured on the highway.
This is not the first time the head of the powerful Sinaloa Cartel has been captured. He previously escaped from a maximum security prison on July 11, 2015.
The escape was so daring that that Guzman thought it was worthy of a biopic, and met with Sean Penn and Mexican actress Kate del Castillo after his escape to discuss that possibility.
Penn wrote a lengthy article about their encounter for Rolling Stone magazine, in which Guzman was unapologetic about his role in the drug trade.
“I supply more heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine, and marijuana than anybody else in the world. I have a fleet of submarines, airplanes, trucks and boats,” Guzman said.
