NEW YORK—The Riders Alliance, a new organization made up of subway and bus riders in New York, is formally launching on Nov. 19, with an event at Bubble Lounge just south of Canal Street.
The alliance wants to win better transit “by organizing transit riders into a powerful political constituency,” according to its website. The organization wants to advocate for riders’ interests to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (which runs the subways and buses), the press, and local elected officials.
The ultimate goal of training residents around the city in transit advocacy is to have an impact by summer 2014, “in time to participate in the expected public debate about how to fund the MTA’s next five-year capital plan,” according to the website.
