New Jersey Nets center Brook Lopez will undergo surgery Friday on his foot after suffering a stress fracture of the fifth metatarsal in Wednesday’s game against the Knicks, according to a report on the Net’s website.
Lopez, who led the team in scoring last year at 20.4 points per game, is not expected to have a timetable for a return until the surgery is complete. Lopez’s teammate Damion James had a similar injury last season that sidelined him for 48 games.
“It’s tough but it’s sports,” said Nets general manager Billy King. “It is what it is. I’m just happy that it'll be something that he can recover from and get back on the court and play. There are a lot more people out there that have a lot worse things going on in their lives right now.
New Jersey’s season starts Monday, Dec. 26 at Washington.
