The Washington Nationals have signed free agent pitcher Dan Haren to a one-year $13 million deal, pending a physical, according to a report on MLB’s website.
Haren will likely fill the void left by Edwin Jackson, who became a free agent after the season.
“Great athlete, outstanding stuff, gamer,” manager Davey Johnson said. “He fits right in. I know he can swing the bat. If we get that finalized, he'll be a great addition.”
The 32-year-old Haren had been one of the more durable, and effective, pitchers in the league heading into 2012 with seven straight seasons of 33 or more starts. Six of those seasons included an ERA under 4.00.
Last season the three-time All-Star Haren missed time with injuries to his back and hip and finished with a 12-13 record and a 4.33 ERA.
