NASA wants people to apply to be astronauts in preparation for a huge push to Mars and beyond.
The United States space agency will start accepting applications next month.
“This next group of American space explorers will inspire the Mars generation to reach for new heights, and help us realize the goal of putting boot prints on the Red Planet,” NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said November 4 in a statement.
“Those selected for this service will fly on U.S.-made spacecraft from American soil, advance critical science and research aboard the International Space Station, and help push the boundaries of technology in the proving ground of deep space.”
The prospective astronauts need just two things--a bachelor’s degree in engineering, biological science, physical science, or math; and either three years or more of related professional experience or at least 1,000 hours of pilot-in-command time in jet aircraft.
The agency notes on its website that candidates must be U.S. citizens, and must be able to pass NASA’s long-duration spaceflight physical.
Pay starts at $66,000 a year and can go as high as $144,566. Potential applicants should keep an eye on the USA Jobs website, where the job listing is expected to be posted on December 14.
