NEW YORK—The city was filled with music on June 21, as musicians in all five boroughs took to the streets, parks, and waterways to join Make Music New York and let themselves be heard. Some had guitar circles, some played folk or classical music, others sang from boats in Central Park.

Make Music New York is the largest annual music festival in New York City, and the friday event had close to 1,000 free outdoor concerts. The event’s website had a schedule showing where the musical gatherings would be held.

A sea of guitarists covered the concrete area of Union Square park. Guitar World Magazine and NYC Guitar School hosted the concert, but everyone was encouraged to bring a guitar to play along. A man with a full drum set played in the center.

At Central Park Lake, 144 singers in rowboats sang the choral work, Credo, by Canadian composer Raymond Schafer. Trombonists around the lake performed another work by Scafer, Music for Wilderness Lake. A conductor led them from a boat in the middle of the lake.
