Yet another Prince tribute involving Jimmy Fallon.
An emotional performance by D'Angelo on “The Late Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” that aired on April 26, depicted the musician singing “Sometimes it Snows in April.” He was joined on stage by cover band, Princess—which consists of Saturday Night Live cast mate Maya Rudolph, and jazz vocalist Gretchen Lieberum. The pair sings background.
The trio are on a purple lit stage and D'Angelo is seated behind a Yamaha piano, dressed in a white fur vest and black top hat. He melodically sings the lyrics to the song off of Prince’s 1986 album,“Parade.” At one point during the performance his face appears to be wet from tears.
This is just one of several Prince tributes officiated by Jimmy Fallon. He shared the moment he was challenged to a ping pong match by Prince on the April 25 broadcast of his eponymous late night talk show.
Describing the final moments of the game, Fallon said: “He hits this ball, and it’s in slow motion. It’s turning, I can see it turning, flames are coming off it, it hits the edge of the table at that perfect part where it’s unhittable, it goes flying but he scores the point. It hits the edge of the table, he wins the game. The ball goes flying, I go back to get the ball, I’m looking for it, I get the ball … and he’s gone.”
Fallon also hosted the hour long tribute, “Goodnight Prince” by Saturday Night Live.
“Prince has been a special presence here at ‘Saturday Night Live’ for the last four decades,” he said during the April 23 airing. “From his debut on the show as a 22-year-old in 1981, to his surprise performance at the after party for the ‘SNL’ 40th anniversary. Tonight we wanted to pay tribute to him by looking back at his performances over the years and by remembering what he meant to us. It was a lot.”
