Katusha’s Daniel Moreno timed his sprint perfectly to be first across the line in the uphill finish of Stage Two of the Critérium du Dauphiné. BMC’s Cadel Evans finished seventh to keep second in the General Classification behind Sky’s Bradley Wiggins, who finished ninth.
“Maybe I wasn’t considered a favorite by everyone but I made myself a favorite and I wanted to win,” Moreno told Velonation.com. “With last year’s stage of the Vuelta and the Tour of Piedmonte, this is one of my three best victories I collected.”
The 160-km stage featured six categorized climbs, including three Cat 2s and the Cat 4 finish where the four-rider breakaway was caught five kilometers from the finish line. The stage then came down to which of the climbers was also the best sprinter.
Omega Pharma-Quickstep’s Tony Martin attacked 800 meters from the line followed by Lotto-Belisol’s Jurgen Van Den Broeck and BMC’s Cadel Evans, who made it clear he wanted the stage win. All three started too early; it was Katusha’s Daniel Moreno who calculated correctly and crossed the line two bike-lengths ahead.
