Miss Virginia Courtney Garrett is one of the semifinals for the Miss America 2015 competition in Atlantic City, New Jersey on Sunday night.
Courtney Paige Garrett, 21, hails from Pamplin and graduated from Prince Edward County High School before attending Liberty University. She graduated in May with a degree in communications/public relations and has been accepted into Liberty’s graduate program.
Her goal is to complete a Master of Business Administration program and found a non-profit organization.
Her talent is operatic vocal and her platform issue is defying disabilities.
The nonprofit would be called Communication and Respect for Everyone and promote a caring environment for children with disabilities and their families.
Her 17-year-old brother is autistic and has cerebral palsy.
“It’s something I’ve been working towards my whole life,” she said of helping those with disabilities to the Press of Atlantic City.
The Virginia native also has a fondness for animals--she spends a lot of time at her grandparents farm, where the likes of boa constrictors and llamas are housed.
“Every time I’m there they always put me to work,” she said.
