Australia’s new golden girl Jesinta Campbell, originally from Queensland’s Gold Coast, has unexpectedly secured third place in the Miss Universe 2010 pageant in Las Vegas.
The 19-year-old bar worker shot up in the celebrity ranks overnight, after wowing the judges with her answer to a tricky question on whether the Muslim veil or burqa should be banned.
“I don’t think the government should have any say in what we wear, because we can all make our own personal choices,” Campbell said.
The Daily Telegraph reports that the teenager has already quit her job at the Hugos Lounge bar in Sydney, and hired a celebrity manager. Campbell was crowned Miss Australia 2010 earlier this year.
Campbell is the second Aussie to reach the top three in the Miss Universe pageant in the last decade. In 2004 Jennifer Hawkins won the prestigious crown.
The winner of this year’s pageant, Jimena Navarrete of Mexico, will replace Miss Universe 2009’s Stefania Fernandez.
