Doral mayor: Miss Universe coming to South Florida

MIAMI—Bring on the beauties. The Doral City Council is giving its stamp of approval to host the 2015 Miss Universe Pageant.

On Friday, the council authorized a $2.5 million stipend to host the event at the Trump National Doral Miami hotel. Mayor Luigi Boria said the beauty pageant will serve as an economic stimulator.

Vice Mayor Christi Fraga cast the lone no vote of the four council members present. She said she supports hosting the event but not using city funds for it. Boria said the city will provide $500,000, and private donors will later put up the rest.

The Miss Universe pageant is owned by developer Donald Trump, whose name is also on the Doral hotel. NBC 6 South Florida reports that an official announcement is expected Tuesday.
