Minneapolis radio stations are paying homage to their hometown hero, Prince.
Minneapolis music station KCMP will play his single, “Nothing Compares To You” at 5:07 p.m. Central Time on May 4. The beginning lyrics, “It’s been seven hours and 13 days/Since you took your love away” signifies the time lapsed since the legendary musician’s passing on April 21. He was 57.
“We thought marking this moment over the airwaves with one of Prince’s most ubiquitous songs would be a wonderful way to honor his legacy,” KPMC’s Jim McGuinn said. “We hope that wherever Prince fans are, and whatever radio station they are listening to, they will take a minute to listen and remember his musical genius and artistry.”
Stations across the country are encouraged to join the tribute. So far stations WFUV New York, WXPN Philadelphia and KEXP Seattle are confirmed as taking part in tomorrow’s festivities.
Fans are also encouraged to take to social media using the hashtag #NothingCompares2U” and upload images and videos of themselves listening to the 1994 song.
The gravity of Prince’s death has had a toll on the world, including the music industry and the city of Minneapolis.
“It’s impossible to go to dinner or a party or a water cooler without the conversation somehow sliding over to Prince,” said McGuinn. “We just wanted to honor the man we called our friend, and the music we all love, and thought that maybe we might be able to get radio stations all over the world to share this moment with fans who are missing this great artist.”
