The Minecraft Xbox One Edition will allow players to transfer their saves from the Xbox 360 to the next-generation console when it is released, it was confirmed by Microsoft.

Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft’s Xbox division, tweeted: “After months of teaming up with Mojang, we can confirm that Minecraft X360 Edition will save transfer to Xbox One Edition...more news soon!”

The Minecraft: Xbox One Edition will likely be a larger game with even more to explore than the Xbox 360 Version.

Microsoft said it would release an Xbox One vesion of Minecraft back at E3 2013 last summer, and the game will also be ported to the PlayStation 4. The port is being handled by Scotland-based 4J Studios, which transferred Minecraft to the Xbox 360 from the PC.

In March, Spencer indicated that the Xbox One version is “ever close” to being completed, IGN reported. “I talked to [4J Studios] last night,” Spencer said at the time. “They feel really good about the progress that they’re making. It’s their game, and it’d be Mojang’s game. We graciously host it on our platform.

He added: “But unlike on 360 where they had never been on console before and the developer relationship, I’ll say, was very tight from the beginning, this is something that’s really in their hands now,” Spencer continued. “They’re a full-fledged developer in every sense. They control the [release] date of that, but I’ll tell people that we’re getting really close. I talked with Notch [aka Mojang founder Markus Persson] last night, and they’re really excited about the quality.”

A few weeks ago, 4J said that the PS 4 and Xbox One editions are being “worked on,” according to its Twitter feed. “The main thing we’re working on is Minecraft Editions for Xbox One, PS4 and PS Vita, and Patch 1.06 for PS3 :)” it wrote.

It’s unclear when the PS4 and Xbox One versions will be released. A PS Vita version is also being planned.
