Tremors rocked north India as a mild earthquake hit Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday. Measuring 5.8 on richter scale its epicenter was in Baderwah region, on the border of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh states.
Felt around from 12:27 pm to 12:34 pm IST, initial reports indicate about six buildings have suffered minor damages including few schools in Bhaderwah.
The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir state, Omar Abdullah tweeted, “ 7 children & 2 teachers reported injured in 3 different schools. Some damage to structures in the region of Doda, Gandoh & Badarwah.”
Abdullah in a separate tweet also said that State Disaster Response Force and District officers have been sent to the site. “Yup, I felt those tremors in Srinagar. Strange thing was that I heard the rumble before the house started to shake,” said his another tweet.
Tremors were also felt in other parts of North India in New Delhi and Punjab. The tremors shook building prompting people to come out of home and check about the whereabouts of dear ones.
“I was sitting on a bed and felt the tremors. Everyone came out of home. Neighbors were also out. It was not much, I felt it just for a second or two,” said Aman Chowdhary, 20, from Jammu city.
The state of Jammu and Kashmir is the western most extension of the Himalayan mountain range in India. The region is prone to earthquakes. Further reports are awaited.
