NEW YORK—Crosstown bike lanes in Midtown got the seal of approval from Community Board 6 Wednesday evening.

The board approved four proposed pairs of bike lanes, totaling eight lanes, running from First to Eighth avenues, in the same direction as the traffic on 39th, 40th, 43rd, 44th, 48th, 51st, 54th, and 55th streets.

The Department of Transportation is planning to implement crosstown lane enhancements this summer—around the same time 10,000 bicycles will flood Manhattan as part of the city’s new bike share program.

Current bicycle routes jut north-south on First Avenue and Second Avenue from 57th Street and 58th Street respectively all the way to Chinatown. Broadway, Eighth Avenue, Sixth Avenue, and 12th Avenue also have bicycle infrastructure.

Community Board 5 voted on the proposed pairs of bike lanes Thursday evening, though results could not be obtained before press deadline.
