Michael Douglas says that his battle with throat cancer has helped him repair his relationship with his father, according to an exclusive interview Douglas had with Hollywood Reporter.
The Wall Street actor was diagnosed with the disease in August and has been undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment, leaving him weak, frail, and voiceless for stretches of time.
But in the interview, Douglas admitted that the diagnosis and subsequent treatments have brought him closer to this father Kirk, with whom he has a rocky relationship.
Douglas, 66, admits that “I was worried about my father,” but “he couldn’t have been sweeter. He really made an effort. He was back here almost 10 days.”
“He came over every day. He was great,” he told the Reporter. “He and my stepmother, they’re a tough, strong bunch.”
Douglas explained how as a child, he was angry over his parents’ divorce and felt that his father wasn’t there for him during his childhood. Douglas said his father Kirk, 93 and also an actor, was “all-consumed [and] overworked.”
Despite his cancer treatment, Michael Douglas has signed on to star as Liberace in the biopic by the same name to be directed by Steven Soderbergh. Filming will begin in the summer, presumably to give time to Douglas to recover from his series of treatments.
