Meteors have been spotted across the northeast on Monday night, including one in Morristown, New Jersey.
That meteor was caught on video around 6:30 p.m. EST.
The American Meteor Society has received hundreds of reports throughout the northeast.
“Considering I can usually see less than 10 stars in the nighttime sky from midtown Manhattan, this was pretty noticeable and bright. It definitely seemed closer in altitude than most plans that fly over,” said Dan A. of New York City, describing the meteor as two brief bursts, with the second larger than the first.
“I saw meteor as three distinct objects as I walked out the front door,” said Jim F. of Bay Shore, NY.
“I am not sure of any sounds. The burn might have started much higher in the sky. I only noticed it when it fragmented. We have no street lights in our neighborhood and that might have helped the view,” added Donald G. of Norristown, PA.
“Was amazing!!! Way brighter and much, much bigger and lower than any shooting star I’ve ever seen. It had colors (blues, yellow, orange?) and flashes and was a smooth, fast VERY bright trajectory before it just faded away,” added Sue F. of Smithfield, RI.
The society has yet to comment on the meteor activity.
The activity could be an early portion of the Quadrantids meteor shower, which typically starts in January, or the tail end of the Geminids meteor shower, which peaks in mid-December.
